Carmelo Fontánez, (San Juan, P.R., 1945)
Pintor, dibujante y profesor. Obtuvo un Bachillerato en Educación con especialidad en Arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y una Maestría en Educación en Arte de New York University. En Puerto Rico formó parte de grupos como Borinquen 12 y Forma Universitaria. Fue profesor de arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, en los recintos de Mayagüez y Bayamón. También impartió clases en la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte de San Juan y la Escuela de Artes Plásticas. Su obra ha sido galardonada en diversos certámenes de arte auspiciados por el Ateneo Puertorriqueño, La Revista Sin Nombre, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Asociación de Críticos de Arte Capítulo de Puerto Rico, además de bancos y corporaciones privadas. Inspirado en el paisaje puertorriqueño, ha desarrollado una obra de lenguaje abstracto caracterizada por un fuerte lirismo. Su producción se distingue por su particular vocabulario de formas orgánicas de gran expresividad y armonía.

Painter, draftsman and professor. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a specialization in Art from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master of Arts in Art Education from New York University. In Puerto Rico he has belonged to groups such as Borinquen 12 and Forma Universitaria. He was art professor at the University of Puerto Rico’s in Mayagüez and Bayamón. He also taught at the San Juan League of Art Students, and the School of Plastic Arts. His work has received awards at numerous art competitions sponsored by the Ateneo Puertorriqueño, Sin Nombre magazine, the University of Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Chapter of the Art Critics Association, banks, and private corporations. Inspired by the Puerto Rican landscape, in his work he has developed an abstract language with a strong lyrical character. His production is distinguished by a particular vocabulary of greatly expressive and harmonious organic forms.
