Zilia Sánchez, (La Habana, Cuba, 1934)
Pintora, escultora, artista gráfica, creadora de construcciones y profesora. Comenzó sus estudios en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro en La Habana, Cuba en 1957. Se marchó de Cuba y vivió en España, Italia, Canadá y Nueva York. Prosiguió estudios en restauración de obras de arte en el Taller de Herber Feist en Nueva York y en el Instituto Central de Conservación y Restauración de Madrid. Estudió también grabado en el Pratt Institute de Brooklyn. Recibió en dos ocasiones la beca de la Fundación Cintas y ha participado en eventos internacionales como la Bienal de Sao Paulo. En la década del setenta, realizó varios murales en fachadas de edificios residenciales en Puerto Rico. Forma parte de la facultad de la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte de San Juan, y se ha desempeñado también como profesora de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas. Obtuvo premios y distinciones importantes como el Primer Premio de Pintura (IV Salón de Pintura de UNESCO, San Juan, 1978) y Premio de Adquisición (IV Bienal de Medellín, Museo La Tertulia, Colombia, 1980), entre otros. Su obra abstracta se distingue por la construcción de lienzos estirados en los que se proyectan formas punzantes de connotación erótica, que la artista acentúa con una pigmentación circular en tonos blancos y grises.

Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, construction creator, and professor. She began her studies at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba in 1957. She left Cuba and lived in Spain, Italy, Canada, and New York. She continued her studies in artwork restoration at the Herber Feist Workshop in New York and the Madrid Central Institute of Conservation and Restoration. She also studied engraving at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She has twice been awarded the Cintas Foundation scholarship and has participated in international events such as the São Paulo Biennial. During the seventies, she painted murals on the façades of several residential buildings in Puerto Rico. She is a faculty member at the San Juan League of Art Students and has also been a professor at the School of Visual Arts. She has received awards and important distinctions, such as First Prize in Painting at the IV UNESCO Painting Salon in San Juan in 1978, and the Acquisition Prize from the IV Medellín Biennial at the La Tertulia Museum in Colombia in 1980, among others. Her abstract work is distinguished by the construction of taut canvases from which project erotically charged pointed shapes, accentuated by the artist with a circular pigmentation of white and gray tones.
