Rafael Tufiño Figueroa, (Nueva York, US, 1922 –San Juan, PR., 2088)
Pintor, dibujante, artista gráfico, muralista e ilustrador. Comenzó estudios de pintura con Alejandro Sánchez Felipe, en San Juan. Trabajó en el taller de Juan Rosado y en 1947 estudió en la Academia de San Carlos de México. Fue miembro fundador del Centro de Arte Puertorriqueño (CAP) en 1950. Se desempeño como artista gráfico de la División de Educación a la Comunidad, donde fue director gráfico desde 1956. En 1953, junto a Lorenzo Homar e Irene Delano, realizó el famoso portafolio Plenas. En 1954, becado por la Fundación Guggenheim, realizó los grabados de El Café, primer portafolio de un solo artista en Puerto Rico. Fue Director del taller de gráfica del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, profesor de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico y colaborador del Taller Boricua en Nueva York en 1973. Ha recibido múltiples galardones y reconocimientos a lo largo de su fructífera carrera como grabador y pintor. Es una de las figuras fundamentales de la Generación del cincuenta. La obra de este gran artista recoge, en cinco décadas de producción pictórica, una gama de temas asociados a la identidad nacional puertorriqueña, a la denuncia de males sociales y al sentimiento caribeño.

Painter, draftsman, graphic artist, muralist, and illustrator. He began studying painting with Alejandro Sánchez Felipe in San Juan. He worked at the Juan Rosado workshop and enrolled in the San Carlos Academy in Mexico in 1947. He was a founding member of the Center for Puerto Rican Art (CAP, by its Spanish acronym) in 1950. He was a graphic artist at the Community Education Division, and its graphic director as of 1956. With Lorenzo Homar and Irene Delano, he produced the famous Plenas portfolio in 1953. In 1954, on a scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation, he created the engravings of El Café, the first portfolio of a single Puerto Rican artist. He was director of the graphics workshop at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, professor at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts, and collaborated with Taller Boricua in New York in 1973. He has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his fruitful career as a painter and engraver. He is one of the major figures of the Fifties Generation. Spanning five decades, the work of this great artist covers a wide range of issues related to Puerto Rican national identity, the denouncement of social problems, and Caribbean emotion.
