Myrna Báez, (San Juan, PR, 1931 - 2018)
Pintora, artista gráfica y profesora. Es una de las pintoras más destacadas del siglo veinte. Obtuvo un Bachillerato en Ciencias Naturales de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y una Licenciatura en Pintura en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid en 1957. A su regreso a Puerto Rico se integró al Taller de Gráfica del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña como aprendiz del maestro Lorenzo Homar. En 1963 asistió al taller de Dimitri Papagorgia en España, para estudiar litografía e intaglio. Estudió en Pratt Graphic Center de Nueva York. Ha sido profesora de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón y la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte en San Juan, miembro fundadora de la Hermandad de Artistas Gráficos de Puerto Rico y presidenta de la sección de Bellas Artes del Ateneo Puertorriqueño. Desde 1988 es artista residente de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, que le otorgó un doctorado honorífico en el 2000. Ha sido reconocida y galardonada en más de doce ocasiones por diversas instituciones culturales de Puerto Rico y del extranjero. Esta gran colorista se destaca por su extensa experimentación técnica en las artes gráficas y la pintura, revelando una fuerte preocupación por la luz. Utiliza los estarcidos y el aerógrafo para crear amplias manchas de color que le permiten una superficie completamente plana en el lienzo. En su obra histórica trabaja el paisaje y la figura humana.

Painter, graphic artist and professor. One of the most outstanding painters of the twentieth century. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science from the University of Puerto Rico and a degree in Painting from the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy in Madrid in 1957. Upon returning to Puerto Rico she joined the Graphics Workshop at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture as an apprentice under maestro Lorenzo Homar. In 1963 she studied lithography and intaglio at the Dimitri Papagorgia studio in Spain. She studied at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York. She has been a professor at Sacred Heart University and the San Juan League of Art Students, founding member of the Brotherhood of Puerto Rico Graphic Artists, and president of the Fine Arts section of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño. She has been resident artist at Sacred Heart University since 1988 and received an honorary Ph.D. from the institution in 2000. She has received over a dozen recognitions and awards from numerous cultural institutions in Puerto Rico and abroad. This great colorist is known for her extensive technical experimentation in the graphic arts and painting, and her work reveals a great interest in light. She uses stencils and the airbrushing to create ample color marks which allow for a completely flat surface on the canvas. Her historical work deals with landscapes and the human body.
