Ángel Botello Barros (Galicia, España, 1913-1986)

Pintor, artista gráfico y escultor. Comenzó sus estudios de arte en 1930, bajo la tutela de François Maurice Roganeaux en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Burdeos, Francia. En 1935 regresó a España para estudiar en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid. La Guerra Civil Española interrumpió su educación y en 1940 se estableció en la República Dominicana y luego en Haití. En 1953 se radicó en Puerto Rico y abrió la Galería Las Antillas, convirtiéndose luego en Galería Botello, una de las primeras galerías de arte en Puerto Rico. Desde entonces se dedicó por completo a su trabajo artístico. Cultivó el paisaje, el bodegón y la figura humana, esta última convirtiéndose en el tema central de su obra. Simplificaba las figuras geométricas y creaba grandes áreas de color plano fuertemente delineadas.

Painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He began his art studies in 1930 under the guidance of François Maurice Roganeaux at the School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, France. In 1935 he returned to Spain to study at the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy in Madrid. His studies were interrupted as a result of the Spanish Civil War and he set up residence in the Dominican Republic in 1940 and, later, in Haiti. In 1953 he moved to Puerto Rico and opened Galería Las Antillas, which later became Galería Botello, one of the first art galleries in Puerto Rico. From then on, he dedicated himself completely to his artwork. He painted landscapes, still-lifes, and the human body, and the latter became the central theme of his artwork. He simplified geometric figures and created large areas of strongly delineated flat color.
