José Alicea, (Ponce, P.R., 1928)
Artista gráfico, pintor y profesor. A partir de 1943 estudió dibujo bajo la tutela de Miguel Pou. En 1957 ingresó al Taller de Gráfica del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, bajo la dirección de Lorenzo Homar, de quien fue asistente. Allí laboró hasta 1965, convirtiéndose luego en profesor de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico hasta 1999. Su extensa obra gráfica, consta de serigrafías, aguafuertes, linóleos y xilografías, por las cuales ha recibido premios desde la década del sesenta. Ha exhibido en exposiciones individuales y colectivas en Estados Unidos, España, Puerto Rico y el Caribe. Fue el primer artista puertorriqueño en presentar una exposición individual únicamente de grabados en el Ateneo Puertorriqueño. A menudo incorpora en su obra textos literarios y aborda temas sociales e históricos, trabajados mediante la figuración.

Graphic artist, painter, and professor. He began his studies in 1943 under the guidance of Miguel Pou. In 1957 he joined the Graphics Workshop of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, where he was an assistant to director Lorenzo Homar. He continued working there until 1965, and was later a professor at the Puerto Rico School of Visual Arts until 1999. His extensive work in graphics includes silkscreens, etched plates, linoleums, and xylographies, and has been recognized with numerous awards since the nineteen-sixties. He has held individual and collective exhibitions in the United States, Spain, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. He was the first Puerto Rican artist to present an individual exhibition consisting entirely of engravings at the Ateneo Puertorriqueño. His work often incorporates literary texts and deals with social and historical subjects in a figurative manner.
