Sylvia Espinet, (San Juan, P.R., 1932)

Ceramist. She first studied at the Washington Irving School where she studied design and sewing, flower arrangement, and fine pastry-making. She owned a flower shop and spent some time creating arts and crafts, until she began exploring ceramics on her own and decided to take some courses. She studied at the San Juan League of Art Students, Casa Candina, the School of Plastic Arts, and the University of Puerto Rico. She also attended workshops in New Mexico, Tampa, and Puerto Rico (at the Toni Hambleton workshop). For many years she had her own workshop in Carraizo, Trujillo Alto. She was a volunteer teacher in the Puerto Rico public schools and was able to exhibit her students’ work; similarly, she worked at the Art & Clay Studio in New Mexico. In 1954 one of her pieces was chosen for inclusion in the Fifth Centenary Exhibit. She won the Popular Ceramics Highest Award in Orlando, Florida. Her work has been shown in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, the United States, and Brazil. Her sculptural work deals with the spheres through which she explores the world.
