Marcos Irizarry, (Mayagüez, PR, 1936 - San Juan, PR, 1995)

Artista gráfico, pintor y profesor. Comenzó su formación con el pintor español Cristóbal Ruiz en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid, donde aprendió el grabado en metal, técnica en la que llegó a ser un artista innovador y virtuoso. Cultivó el aguafuerte y el aguatinta combinándolos creativamente con otras técnicas, y a partir de 1988 incursionó en la pintura. Promovió la creación del taller de grabado en metal de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico. Fue profesor de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez y su artista residente desde 1987 hasta su muerte. Tuvo mucha exposición en España, Roma, Yugoslavia, Estados Unidos, Colombia, República Dominicana y Panamá. Su obra muestra una evolución de estilos que responden a su contacto con los movimientos internacionales de vanguardia durante los veintiseis años que permaneció en España y el resto de Europa.

Graphic artist, painter, and professor. He began his training with Spanish painter Cristóbal Ruiz at the University of Puerto Rico. He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he learned metal engraving, a technique in which he would become a virtuous and innovative artist. He practiced etching and aquatint, combining them creatively with other techniques, and in 1988 he began painting. He promoted the development of the metal engraving workshop at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts. He was a professor at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus, and its Resident Artist from 1987 until his death. He received a great deal of exposure in Spain, Rome, Yugoslavia, the United States, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. His work demonstrates an evolution of styles in response to his contact with international avant garde movements during the twenty-six years he lived in Spain and Europe.
