María Emilia Somoza, (San Juan, PR. 1938-2016)
Artista gráfica. En 1959 se graduó del Colegio Universitario del Sagrado Corazón con un Bachillerato en Artes. Años después obtuvo una Maestría en Artes de la Universidad de Nueva York, de donde obtuvo también un Doctorado en Filosofía (este último gracias a la beca de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y la Fundación Ford). Asistió al Taller Profesional de Pratt Institute, donde concentró su aprendizaje en técnicas gráficas de aguafuerte, litografía y colografía. Discípula de maestros como Juan Gómez Quirós, Robert Blackburn, Claire Romano, David Firkbanner, y Jeff Stone, entre muchos otros. Fue profesora de arte del sistema público de Puerto Rico y profesora de Historia del Arte en colegios de Nueva York. Entre las décadas del sesenta y setenta organizó el programa de arte de la Escuela Central de Bellas Artes en Santurce. Trabajó como conferenciante en el Metropolitan Museum de Nueva York. Hasta 1980 organizó y dirigió el Programa de Artes Plásticas del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, donde además organizó la IV Bienal de San Juan del Grabado Latinoamericano, con el cual tuvo la oportunidad de crear el Primer Taller Panamericano de Artes Gráficas en Puerto Rico, para estudiantes de distintos países, aprovechando la celebración de los Juegos Panamericanos. Exhibió su obra dentro y fuera del país. En 1973 sus grabados recibieron el Primer Premio del United Federal Bank y del certamen IBEC.Fungió como Directora Ejecutiva del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico. Fue considerada como una de las mejores exponentes de la técnica del aguafuerte en toda Latinoamérica.

Graphic artist. She graduated from Sacred Heart College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts. Years later, she completed her Master of Arts at New York University, where she also completed a Ph.D. on a scholarship from the University of Puerto Rico and the Ford Foundation. She attended the Professional Workshop at Pratt Institute, where her training focused on etched plate, lithography, and collotype-printing techniques. She was a student of maestros Juan Gómez Quirós, Robert Blackburn, Claire Romano, David Firkbanner, and Jeff Stone, among many others. She was an art teacher in the Puerto Rico public schools, and an Art History professor at New York universities. During the sixties and seventies, she organized the art program at the Central School of Fine Arts in Santurce. She worked as a lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. She organized and directed the Visual Arts Program at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture until 1980, where she also organized the IV San Juan Biennial on Latin American Engraving, through which she was able to create the First Pan-American Graphic Arts Workshop in Puerto Rico for students from various countries, on the occasion of the Pan-American Games. She has exhibited her work in Puerto Rico and abroad. In 1973 her engravings won First Prize from the United Federal Bank and at the IBEC competition. She was also the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art. She is considered one of the top exponents of the etched plate technique in all of Latin America.
