Rafael Trelles, (San Juan, P.R., 1957)

Pintor, artista gráfico, creador de instalaciones, diseñador de escenografía y vestuario. Comenzó sus estudios de pintura a los once años de edad con el pintor Julio Llort. Luego de haber obtenido un Bachillerato en Artes de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, viajó por varios países de Europa y luego se trasladó a México, donde realizó estudios posgraduados en la Academia San Carlos, Universidad Autónoma de México. En 1985 se trasladó a las Islas Canarias en España, donde surge la serie de pinturas El tarot del universo. Comenzó a diseñar escenografía y vestuario para ballet y teatro en 1986. De vuelta en Puerto Rico para el 1991, recibe el premio por Mejor Instalación, de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte, Capítulo de Puerto Rico, por la instalación Visitas al Velorio, realizada en el Museo de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Ha sido miembro fundador de diversos grupos artísticos; La Iguana Marina, en México, Delfín del Cielo en Islas Canarias, España, y EI Alfil en San Juan, Puerto Rico, con el que actualmente sigue trabajando. Su obra se mueve de una figuración de contenido sociocultural, a una figuración rica en elementos propios del mundo de los sueños y fantasías, en las cuales el color tiene un papel protagónico. Hace referencia a la obra del pintor surrealista Max Ernst, así como a la literatura y mitología universal.

Painter, graphic artist, installation creator, and set and costume designer. He began his studies in painting when he was eleven years old with painter Julio Llort. After completing his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Puerto Rico, he traveled through several European countries and later moved to Mexico, where he pursued postgraduate studies at the San Carlos Academy of the Autonomous University of Mexico. In 1985 he traveled to the Canary Islands in Spain, where the series of paintings El tarot del universo (The Tarot of the Universe) was born. He began designing sets and costumes for ballet and theater in 1986. Having returned to Puerto Rico, in 1991 he received the Best Installation prize from the Puerto Rico Chapter of the International Association of Art Critics for his installation Visitas al Velorio (Visits to the Wake) at the University of Puerto Rico Museum. He has been a founding member of several artistic groups: La Iguana Marina, in Mexico, Delfin del Cielo in the Canary Islands, Spain; and El Alfil in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in which he remains currently active. His figurative work has shifted from a socio-cultural content to pieces filled with elements from the worlds of dream and fantasy in which color plays a central role. He makes references to the work of surrealist painter Max Ernst, as well as to universal literature and mythology.
