Carlos Marichal (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Islas Canarias, 1923 - San Juan, PR, 1969)

Pintor, grabador, dibujante, diseñador gráfico e ilustrador de libros. Estudió en Francia, España, Bélgica y México. Durante la Guerra Civil española, salió de su país. Llegó a Puerto Rico en 1949 contratado por la Universidad de Puerto Rico como director técnico del Teatro Universitario. En 1951, dirigió el Teatro de Verano de Middlebury College. Fue profesor de grabado, dibujo y diseño gráfico en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Diseñó trajes y escenografía para un ballet de Alicia Alonso, en Nueva York. Se incorporó al grupo “El Tinglado Puertorriqueño” y diseñó y construyó escenografías para numerosas obras de teatro y ballet. Se distinguió como diseñador publicitario y diseñador industrial, hizo carteles, ilustró libros y revistas, y enseñó sus variadas artes a numerosos aristas puertorriqueños.

Painter, engraver, draftsman, graphic designer, and book illustrator. He studied in France, Spain, Belgium, and Mexico. Left his country during the Spanish Civil War. He arrived in Puerto Rico in 1949, having been hired by the University of Puerto Rico as technical director of the University Theater. In 1951, he directed the Summer Theater at Middlebury College. He was professor of engraving, drawing, and graphic design at the University of Puerto Rico. He designed the wardrobe and sets for an Alicia Alonso ballet in New York. He joined the “El Tinglado Puertorriqueño” (“The Puerto Rican Setup”) group and designed and built sets for numerous theater and ballet productions. He became known as an advertising and industrial designer, made posters, illustrated books and magazines, and taught his varied skills to a great number of Puerto Rican artists.
