Epifanio Irizarry (Ponce, PR, 1915 - 2001)

Pintor, ilustrador y profesor.

Epifanio Irizarry (Ponce, PR, 1915 - 2001)

Painter, illustrator and professor. He studied with Ponce painters Horacio Castaing, Librado Net, and Miguel Pou. He was drafted into General Patton’s army and sent to Austria and France. During the fifties, he studied at the New York League of Art Students under Reginald Marsh and Robert Brackman, among others. Upon his return to Puerto Rico, he joined the Graphics Studio of the Community Education Division (DIVEDCO), where he worked as illustrator until 1963. He later returned to his hometown to devote himself entirely to painting and teaching art. Among other recognitions, he has received the American International Academy Award and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Grant. His work deals with everyday themes, presenting folkloric scenes and the Puerto Rican landscape. Inspired by his hometown, he painted scenes such as bomba and plena dances, carnival, and the coastal landscape. Monochromatic and sober colors characterize his work, as well as his loose and expressive brushstrokes.
